Turkey’s parliament has approved a new media law, under which journalists and social media users can be jailed for up to three years.
Section 29 of the law is of greatest concern regarding freedom of expression, stating that those who make false statements online about Turkey’s security with the aim of “inciting fear and disrupting public order” are prohibited. They will face imprisonment from one to three years if they spread the information.
The opposition, European countries and media rights activists have called for the law to be scrapped.
The bill will now be sent to the President for final assent.
